Developing My Dream Game - First Post

Hello, since this is my first post, I’d like to start by introducing myself. My name is Onur, and I work as a mechanical engineer. Computers started as a hobby for me at a young age. Anyway 😃

You may know that there used to be games like Ikariam, Travian, and Tribal Wars that had a huge player base. Since they couldn’t provide the necessary updates and platform support for their games, most of them are now just old memories.

Companies seized this opportunity by creating strategy games on mobile platforms, reaching millions of downloads, but now we have another problem. For companies, everything is essentially about money, so we can gain an advantage over other players by spending serious money in their games. Call it capitalism or pay to win.

That’s why I decided to make a game similar to the ones I played in my youth. Maybe I won’t be able to create something very original in terms of mechanics, but it will be fair and it will be my project.

We will have a city of our own, and we will determine our fate through the relationships we build with other players.

Our game structure will be similar to the games I mentioned above. We will have one city scene and one world scene. We will use the power of the economy, military, and diplomacy to keep our name alive.

Technologies and softwares to be used

  • Inkscape for mainly 2D drawing
  • Defold for game engine

I don’t use any raster-based painting software because I work only with a mouse, and the easiest way to work with a mouse is by using vector-based software.

I also use Defold as my game engine. Previously, I used Godot(plain source code), Unity(heavy), and Cocos(lack of offline) to see what each of them offered and what they lacked, and eventually I decided on Defold. It’s lightweight, open source, and very easy to test on mobile devices.
